The Stoney Vineyard was established in 1973, the first in the Coal River Valley. It has 6 varieties close-planted in the European tradition of 6000 vines per hectare on 200-million-year-old Jurassic dolerite soils. This combined with its NNE aspect, low rainfall and an abundance of sunshine hours led Peter and Ruth Althaus to purchase it 1989. They had long searched for a cool-climate site to make Bordeaux inspired reds, so it was here they created Domaine A.
Under Peter and Ruth’s careful stewardship the domaine became an Australian icon, recognised for producing world-class wines true to their Tasmanian terroir. When the Althaus’ retired the domaine was acquired by a long-time fan David Walsh, owner of Moorilla Estate and MONA. As new custodians of this incredible vineyard he and winemaker Conor van der Reest continue the Althaus’ winemaking traditions; producing wines of complexity, longevity and fine structures - a must-have for any list or collector.
